What is coaching?

Coaching is a form of learning, where a person (the coach) supports someone else (coachee) to make progress in some way. Progress may be reaching a certain goal, solve problems or create learning and change. Coaching is normally a conversation that will benefit the coachee in a way that relates to their objectives. Responsibility for learning is on the individual and coaching encourages learning to continue post session. Coaching does not instruct you to do something specific, this takes the power away from you as the coachee. The aim is to empower you. Coaching is about “unlocking an individuals’ potential to maximise their own performance”. (John Whitmore)

A coaching relationship is like no other and is a distinct form of support. A space created for you and focused just on you and your objectives; this is rarely experienced elsewhere! An effective coach will listen to you with curiosity, to understand who you are, what you think and how you experience the world. They will also reflect back to you, with an objective assessment and challenge that creates clarity.
